Why does your clinic need a Google Business Profile?
Your Google Business Profile powers Google's map pack, panels and even ChatGPT's local answers. Here's the proof, and why it's every clinic's biggest lever.
Your Google Business Profile is the engine behind almost every way a patient finds your clinic on Google.
In our study of why local SEO matters for private clinics, Google showed a local clinic in 99% of searches. Your Business Profile is what powers nearly all of it: the map pack, the panel, even the AI answer, and it's the same data ChatGPT reads when it recommends a local clinic. This post, part of our guide to local SEO for private clinics, explains what a Google Business Profile is, why it's your single biggest lever, and what to get right.
What is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your clinic's details directly on Google.
It's the panel with your clinic's name, address, phone number, opening hours, reviews, photos, a website link and often a call or booking button. It used to be called Google My Business. It appears in both Google Search and Google Maps, and for a local search it's frequently the very first thing a patient sees, before your website gets a look in.
Why is your Business Profile your biggest lever in local search?
Your Business Profile is your biggest lever because it powers the map pack, the knowledge panel and Google's AI answers, all from one place.
We put numbers on this. Across 219 real patient searches in ten UK cities, a map pack appeared 80% of the time, and in most of the searches with no map, Google still showed a single clinic in a knowledge panel, another 13% of searches. Together, that's a local clinic on show 99% of the time, and both the map and the panel are drawn straight from Google Business Profiles. On top of that, an AI Overview appeared in 14% of searches, and it leans on the same profile data. One free listing feeds all three.
The map pack
The three clinics pinned to the map, with ratings, hours and a route.
The knowledge panel
One clinic given a panel of its own, name, reviews, phone and link.
AI answers
Google's AI Overview and ChatGPT, both reading the same listing.
Does this apply to ChatGPT too?
Yes. When ChatGPT answers a local search, it builds the recommendation from Google Business Profile data too.
We tested it directly. Ask ChatGPT something like "private dentist Manchester" or "aesthetic clinic Birmingham", and the clinics it lists, their order, star ratings, review counts, categories and opening hours all come from Google's business listings.
And we could prove it. Every business ChatGPT returned carried a Google Place ID, the identifier only Google Maps uses. The ratings and review counts matched Google exactly too.
Take "aesthetic clinic Birmingham". ChatGPT showed Secret Aesthetics at 4.9 from 488 reviews, the identical figure to Google. Trustpilot listed the same clinic at 4.5, so the number came from Google, not a review site.
This wasn't a one-off. We saw the same pattern across 13 different service categories and all ten cities.
So the same profile that wins your map pack is what puts your clinic in ChatGPT's answer.
Your website still plays a part, just a different one. Alongside its clinic recommendations, ChatGPT often lists a few web pages it referred to, and a strong site can show up there. But the list of recommended clinics itself is built from Google Business Profiles, not from websites.
One caveat: the exact clinics ChatGPT names can change from one search to the next. What doesn't change is the source. Every time, the business data came from Google.
Isn't my website enough?
No, because Google often shows your Business Profile before it ever shows your website.
Plenty of patients call, get directions or book straight from the profile without visiting your site at all. So if your profile is thin, out of date or wrong, they don't dig through your website to make up for it. They tap the next clinic on the list, the one whose profile looks complete and trustworthy.
What does a complete profile actually do for your clinic?
A complete, active profile makes your clinic visible, credible and easy to contact.
It gets you onto the map and into the panel for the searches that matter in your area. It reassures a patient with genuine reviews, real photos and full information before they've clicked anything. And it makes contact effortless, with a tap to call, a route to your door and a link to book. We've seen a counsellor who simply claimed and filled in a neglected listing start appearing for “therapist near me” and take calls that came directly from the profile within weeks.
What does this look like in practice?
Getting local search right, with the Business Profile at the centre of it, moves real numbers for real clinics.
A private orthopaedic clinic in Birmingham saw enquiries rise by 70% within nine months. A private gynaecologist in London grew consultations by 186% in six months. And a private dental clinic grew by 87% in under a year. Different specialties, different cities, same pattern: become genuinely visible where patients are already searching, and the enquiries follow.

What should your clinic focus on?
Your clinic should focus on claiming the profile, completing it accurately, earning reviews and keeping it active.
You don't need to master every setting to benefit, but you should know the pillars: claim and verify ownership so you control it, fill in every field accurately, add real photos, earn and reply to genuine patient reviews, and keep it current as things change. Each of those pieces, your business name, your categories, your opening hours, your services, your photos and your reviews, is worth getting right on its own, and we take them one at a time across the rest of this series. This post is the map of the ground we're about to cover.
What happens if you ignore it?
Ignore your Business Profile and Google may fill it in for you, or hand the space to a competitor.
Unclaimed clinics often still show up, with Google auto-generating the listing from whatever it can find, sometimes with the wrong hours or an unflattering Street View photo. Anyone can even suggest edits to it. Meanwhile competitors with polished, active profiles take the map spots you could be holding. Leaving yours set up and forgotten doesn't keep things steady, it quietly costs you enquiries.
