Keyword for Healthcare SEO

How Healthcare Clinics Can Choose Keywords

Starting with SEO for Private Clinics

Keywords: The Foundation of SEO

When diving into SEO for private clinics, a logical starting point is with keywords.

You might hear these referred to as search queries or key phrases. Essentially, these are the words and terms people use when searching online.

Search engines like Google work by matching these terms and phrases to the most relevant web pages and websites available on the internet.

Here’s a quick look at how to choose keywords for your clinic without buying expensive tools or hiring an overpriced agency.

The Importance of Keywords

In a previous article we looked at the six foundations of SEO for healthcare clinics. Keywords underpin all six of those foundations and should be the starting point of any online campaign for your practice.

By using the keywords that people search for on your clinic’s website, you signal to search engines that you have the most relevant information. This means your website will rank higher, increasing visibility in online searches. Consequently, people are more likely to find your website.

An Example: Private Orthopedic Surgeon Harley Street London

Let’s say someone types in “private orthopedic surgeon Harley Street London.” Google returns results containing those keywords.

For example, if we search for that phrase then check for the occurrence of the word “private,” it appears multiple times in the top results. Similarly, “orthopedic,” “surgeon,” and “Harley Street” are highlighted across various top-ranking websites.

How to Choose the Right Keywords for Your Clinic

Understanding Keyword Research

The process of deciding which keywords to use on your website is known as keyword research. There are many excellent tools available for keyword research that provide valuable information. These tools can tell you how often particular treatments and services are being searched for, how competitive those search terms are, and much more. We will explore these tools in more detail in a future lesson.

The Best Tool: Your Own Brain!

Sometimes, the best tool for keyword research is your own brain. No one knows your clinic and specialty as well as you do. Starting with your own ideas and thoughts is always a great approach.

Creating Your Keyword List

Let’s start by making a list of potential keywords. Imagine you are an orthopedic surgeon. Think about what people are most likely to search for when looking for your clinic. Possible keywords might include:

  • Orthopedic clinics
  • Orthopedic specialists
  • Orthopedic treatment centers

Next, consider keywords related to you as an individual. People might search for:

  • Orthopedic consultant
  • Orthopedic specialist
  • Orthopedic doctor
  • Orthopedic surgeon

Finally, list out the different services and treatments you offer. This could include:

  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Sports medicine
  • Gait analysis

Write each of these down as separate keywords without combining them.

Targeting Private Patients

If you want to attract private patients specifically, prefix your keywords with “private.” This helps to attract more targeted traffic, increasing the likelihood of converting visitors into private patients.

For example, instead of just “orthopedic surgeon,” use “private orthopedic surgeon Kensington.” This approach reduces competition and helps you stand out.

Avoiding Medical Jargon

While it’s good to be specific, avoid going too deep into medical terminology. Most people won’t search for highly technical terms like “total knee replacement” or “robotic knee replacement.” Instead, use simpler phrases like “private knee replacement.”

Combining Your Keywords

In the final step, combine your keywords to create targeted phrases that your ideal patients are likely to search for. For example:

  • “Orthopedic clinic” becomes “private orthopedic clinic Kensington London”
  • “Orthopedic surgeon” becomes “private orthopedic surgeon Kensington London”
