Ranking Your Clinic in ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity

Patients are starting to ask AI for treatment recommendations. Here's how to make sure your clinic is the answer.

Ranking your clinic in AI search engines, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity
The short answer

To be recommended by AI tools, become the clearest, most credible source on your specialty. That means strong E-E-A-T, content structured around real patient questions, accurate structured data, and a trusted presence across the wider web. Good SEO and "AI optimisation" largely overlap.

A growing number of patients no longer start at Google's blue links. They ask ChatGPT "who's the best private knee surgeon in London?", check Google's AI Overviews, or use Perplexity to compare clinics. These tools don't just rank pages, they synthesise an answer and name a handful of sources. Being one of those named sources is the new frontier of healthcare visibility, and most clinics haven't started competing for it yet.

The shift from "ten blue links" to one answer

Traditional search gives the patient a list to choose from. Generative search gives them a recommendation. That changes the game: instead of competing for a click, you're competing to be included in the answer itself. The clinics that win are the ones AI models can confidently understand, trust and cite, which rewards clarity and credibility over keyword tricks.

How AI tools decide who to mention

Large language models draw on the patterns in their training data and, increasingly, live web results retrieved at the moment of the query. In practice, they favour sources that are:

  • Authoritative, clearly written by credible, identifiable experts.
  • Consistent, the same facts about your clinic appear across many trusted places.
  • Well-structured, easy to parse, with clear questions and direct answers.
  • Frequently referenced, mentioned and linked by other reputable sites.

AI doesn't reward the loudest clinic, it rewards the one whose expertise is easiest to verify.

Double down on E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust matter more than ever, both for Google's YMYL standards and for AI citations. Make your credibility unmissable and machine-readable:

  • Attribute content to named clinicians with full credentials and registration.
  • Cite reputable medical sources and keep clinical information current.
  • Maintain detailed author and clinic "about" pages that establish who you are.
  • Show real outcomes, accreditations and genuine patient feedback.

Be the definitive source. A thorough, expert-written page answering "what to expect from an ADHD assessment" is far more likely to be cited than a thin marketing page, because the AI can extract a trustworthy answer from it.

Structure content the way machines read it

AI systems extract answers most easily from well-organised content. Help them:

  • Lead with a clear, direct answer, then expand, the inverted pyramid.
  • Use descriptive headings phrased as the questions patients actually ask.
  • Add genuine FAQ sections and concise summaries.
  • Implement structured data (schema) for your organisation, clinicians, services and FAQs.

This is the same work that earns rich results and AI Overviews in Google, so it pays off across every surface at once.

Build a presence beyond your own website

AI models build their picture of your clinic from the whole web, not just your site. Strengthen the wider signals:

  • Keep your Google Business Profile and major directories accurate and consistent.
  • Earn mentions and links from respected health publications and local media.
  • Encourage genuine reviews across trusted platforms.
  • Make sure your clinicians' professional profiles align with your site.

Consistency is everything. If your name, services or specialties are described differently across the web, AI tools become less confident about recommending you. Tidy, consistent information is a genuine ranking advantage.

How to measure AI visibility

Measurement is still maturing, but you can track it pragmatically: periodically ask the major AI tools the questions your patients would, and note whether you're mentioned. Watch for referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics, and monitor your appearance in Google's AI Overviews for priority terms. Several of our clients already appear in these AI summaries, and because so few clinics are optimising for it today, the practices that act now build a lead that's hard to catch.
